Abstract
Aplastic anemia is characterized by peripheral pancytopenia with bone marrow
typoplasia. There have been many suggestions that the clinical features of the patient
with aplastic anemia in Korea would be somewhat different from that of western
countries. But there are few limited reports regarding the clinical data, proportion of
severe groups, and response rates of various treatment modalities in the patients of
Korea. Thus clinical study was performed for 224 patients who were diagnosed as
aplastic anemia at the department of internal medicine, Seoul National University
Hospital (SNUH) during the past 10 years. The results are as the followings.
1. The mean annual incidence of aplastic anemia patients in SNUH was 4.8 per 1,000
patients admitted to the department of internal medicine.
2. This disease was more prevalent among the patients under the age of 30.
3. Male to female ratio was 1 : 1.06.
4. Of the etiologic agents, various pharmaceuticals including herb medicine were
suspected, some patients were associated with hepatitis B virus, and 8 patients with
pregnancy.
5. Macrocytosis and normochromicity was major feature of red cell morphology.
6. Severe cases were 42.4% of all.
7. Further study for survival data and establishment of response criteria are needed.
